Course Description: How to Teach Online
IT Learning Center, Faculty of Life Sciences offers the course "How to Teach Online" to university teachers who would like to use internet based e-learning in their teaching. Either as a supplement to traditional on campus teaching or as 100% distance learning.
Course content
The course primarily deals with the following subjects:
- Examples of learning technologies
- LIFE’s experiences with online teaching methods
- Blended learning and distance learning
- The design of academic online discussions
- The role of the teacher in online discussions
- The planning process of an online course
As part of the course the participants reflect on and develop their own teaching.
In the workshop the participants are going to create a power point presentation with speak with the software Adobe Presenter. Also they will create a test, using the test-tool in Absalon.
Organisation of Teaching
The course consists of 5 modules. 4 of the modules are internet based e-learning modules, and 1 module is a full day workshop on Frederiksberg Campus.
Teaching and learning methods
The 4 online modules have the same structure and are based on discussion tasks. The participants study the electronic learning resources and discuss the main issues in groups of 8 participants joined by one or two teachers.
The teaching method is LIFE’s method for 100% online teaching, which is an adjusted version of Gilly Salmons 5-stage model. This model is based on a socioconstructivist approach to learning. Simplified this means that knowledge is constructed when individuals engage socially in talk and activity about shared problems or tasks.
Thus it is expected that the participants take active part in the course, engage with their fellow course participants and use each other as resources.
The teachers facilitate the discussions by adding new questions, suggestions, solutions, perspectives, conclusions and summaries.
Learning outcome
The main objective of the course is to provide an introduction to online teaching at LIFE with an emphasis on learning technologies, online teaching methods and the role of the online teacher.
After completing the course, the participants should be able to:
Knowledge
- reflect on what it is like to be an online course participant.
- reflect on how they can use different learning technologies in their own teaching.
- reflect on how they can make the students active and engaged by using learning technologies.
- describe the characteristics of the online teacher.
Skills
- apply knowledge of learning technologies and teaching methods to their own teaching when they design their own course.
- use the software Adobe Presenter to add speak to a Power Point Presentation.
- use the test-element in Absalon.
- design an online discussion task.
- make a rough draft of the intended learning outcome, the choice of learning activities and method of assessment for their own course.
Competencies
- work independently on developing their teaching practise.
- collaborate with fellow course participants to explore and discuss the possibilities of online teaching.
- take responsibility for reaching the intended learning outcome in collaboration with their fellow course participants.
The course has continuous assessment and no examination.
In order to pass the course, the participants must complete 75% of the learning activities in the course.

Learning resources
The course is based on the experiences with e-learning at LIFE collected by IT Learning Center, so the learning resources in the course are mainly presentations made by IT Learning Center on the basis of our experiences and research based theory within the fields of e-learning and educational theory.
The presentations are available at the course homepage in Absalon.
It is a priority to make the course practical and to limit the course literature, but we are happy to provide references to additional literature.
